Location of Photoshoot

As the deadline for my final magazine was becoming closer, I thought about beginning to take my original photography which will be used throughout my magazine. I arranged a date with my model and set up a place to take the photos.

I set up some white sheets in a room and asked my model to stand in front of them whilst I photographed her. Using the sheets gave me a plain, blank background in the images making it easier for me to edit them using the programme paint.net at a later time.

Research into image ideas

Although I had originally planned to used balloons as props for my photoshoot, when I researched previous cover stars I came across this photo of the pop singer Katy Perry. I particulary like this photo as she looks extremely girly and feminine because of the use of the colour pink, her make-up, costume and the use of flowers. This photo has  inspired my original photography and made me change my mind about the props I am going to use. My model will therefore be made to look extra feminine with the use of flowers somehow.

Mastheads

I made my final decision that the name of my pop magazine will be 'Burst' and this will be the typeface I will use. I know from questionnaire that my colour scheme should consist of bright colours such as pinks, purples, blues and yellows so I took the masthead I created and experimented with these colours. The colour of the masthead I use will depend on the colours I can pick out of my main cover star image as it will make my magazine look more professional a consistent.

Props for photoshoot

I want my entire magazine to portray a postive, fun message which will appeal to my target audience and make them feel these emotions too. I have thought about the ways in which I can ensure my Masthead could do this so I started thinking about the ways in which the images I will use of my cover star could do this.I thought about the different props I could use and came up with idea of using balloons. I then researched some images of people with balloons and this is what I came up with:

I especially like these two images that I came across as I think they present a 'fun' portrayal of the girl used in the photo which is what I want to create with my cover star.

Cover Star

This is an image of the model I will be using on the front cover of my magazine who will also be featured on the contents page and double page spread. This model will take the form of a pop star I have created called 'Pixie.' I have chosen to used this name as it corresponds with the girly, feminine feel I want my magazine to have and is a realistic name for a pop singer. I have decided to use a solo, female artist in my magazine as in my research I realised many pop magazines tend to do this as it represents a positive role model for readers of the magazine to look up to and as my main target audience is teenagers they can aspire to her. My model also has a particularly girly, pretty look with long, curly hair and bright green eyes which further support the genre of my music magazine and could also be likened to many strong female artists today such as Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry and Jessie J.

Front Covers

After my research into the front covers of typical pop magazines, I started to create some front covers of my own with my own mastheads and cover lines:

Front Cover 1 - I chose an image of the pop star Katy Perry as she is typical of the pop genre. I picked this image of her as she looks particularly feminine because of her hair and make up. I put my masthead 'Burst' in the colour red as it stands out and matches the lipstick of the cover star highlighting her girly image. I featured one main cover line which is the cover star's name in black and the title of her album 'Teenage Dream' in red. I decided to maintain the house colours of red and black as it makes my magazine look more professional and the two colours work well together. I also focused on the layout of my magazine. I placed the bar code, which is one of the main conventions of a magazine, at the bottom left to ensure it does not distract away from the main image and main cover lines. I placed the main cover line in between the cover stars head and shoulder to illustrate it relates to her. The text slightly touches the cover star's which I do not like as it makes it look less professional. Another thing I wasn't sure about with this magazine is although the colours black and red go well together, my questionnaire came up with the result that bright colours such as pinks, blues and purples would be more relevant for a pop magazine.

Front Cover 2 - In this front cover, I incorporated the masthead I designed which I thought was best suited to the type of pop magazine I wanted to create. I found an image of the pop star Pink which was a close up and consisted of bright colours. I think the pink of the masthead, the main cover line and the cover star's lipstick go well with the orange background and cover star's accessories. These bright colours portray a positive image which is what I want my magazine to create for the audience. The cover star is not using direct mode of address, which is what I will most likely use when taking my own photography, but I like this image as it just Pink's face which allows the audience to identify with her more. I have only used one main cover line which is 'P!NK' to reveal to the audience what the main article inside the magazine will be. In my research into magazines, I have noticed that the most effective front covers are quite simple and are not made busy by the use of many cover lines which I tried to illustrate when creating this magazine.

Possible Magazine names and mastheads

As I am creating a pop magazine, I researched the word 'pop' in the Thesaurus to get some ideas of what to call my magazine. Some possible names I came up with are; 'Squeeze,' 'Burst,' 'Echo,' 'Smash' and 'Boom.' I then researched the word 'noise' and came up with; 'Buzz,' 'Talk,' 'Blast' and 'Peace.' Out of all these possible names, my most preferred one is 'Burst.' I think this would be a good name for the magazine I am going to create as it links to the genre of my magazine and projects a positive, happy feel which is what I want my magazine to do. It could also link to the fact that my magazine will be 'bursting' with exciting features such as new and upcoming artists and exclusive interviews.
As I have now decided on the name for my magazine, I started creating possible mastheads that I could use on the front cover of my magazine:

Masthead 1 - I like the way I have designed this particular masthead as it links to the genre of my music magazine as it is feminine and girly. This is effective as it would attract my target audience which is teenage girls. However, I dislike this design as I do not think the font is bold enough for a masthead and therefore may not be eye catching enough if it were to be on a magazine stand. I also think the hearts and the fact that they are pink may be too girly so may decrease the amount of people buying the magazine for example, boys may want to read the articles inside as they may interest them but could be persuaded the magazine is not for them because of this masthead.

Masthead 2 - I like this masthead as I think, unlike masthead 1, it relates to a wider target audience. I have still kept the colour pink as my questionnaire came up with the most popular result that the house colours of my magazine should be bright, but the use of the colour black and the image of the headphones distracts away from the girly, feminine feel. However, although I think this masthead is effective and stands out, I'm not sure whether it would be more suited to a Hip Hop magazine rather then pop. I also think it may be too busy as my research into other music magazine shows their masthead are usually just big and bold but simple which I think is more effective and looks more professional.

Masthead 3 - I tried to base this design on the masthead of Billboard magazine as I think it is a particularly effective masthead. I like the way this is design is simple but stands out because of the large, bold, black font. I used the colour pink again as it relates to the pop genre but also contrasts well with the black. However, as much as I like this design as it looks simple yet professional, I realised that I could not insert enough colour to make my masthead look as effect as the Billboard masthead with the word 'burst' as it is not long enough.

Masthead 4 - This is my most preferred masthead as I think is covers all of the elements I am trying to achieve. The font is big and bold which would stand out against other magazines and is simple so will not distract away from my main image and cover lines. I have used a pale pink colour which comprehends with the results of my questionnaire and is not too bright or girly so wouldn't decline my target audience. Depending on the main image I choose to use, this masthead would also be quite simple to change if I needed to adjust the colour to match my image more effectively. The typeface is also similar to the fashion magazine, 'Vogue' which I particularly like as it provides a professional, classy look to the magazine.

Research into cover stars

I looked at 'We heart pop' magazine which is one of the most famous pop magazines today, and looked closely at the cover stars they often use. As the target audience is young, teenage girls, the magazine often features powerful, female artists they can relate to or be inspired by. They also use boy bands which would also attract a female audience. This research has influenced me and gave me some ideas as to what type of cover star to feature in my magazine as I want to include someone that readers of a pop magazine would want to see.

Double Page Spread

Although these double page spreads have been taken from magazines such as 'Q' which feature rock music, I like the layout they have used. I think the way the left side of the double page spread is taken up by a large image of the cover star is effective as it illustrates to the reader who the article is about. I also like the way they have used the large letters on the right hand side of the double page spread as it is different and catches the readers attention.

Peer Assessment of Magazine - Re-Make/Re-Model Task

Q1. Have all the magazine conventions been used? How successful are these compared to the real thing?
(Masthead/Pugs/Puffs/Dateline/Main image/Cover lines/Left third rule/Bar code/Selling Line)

A. Out of the eight questionnaires completed, the majority of people agreed that most of the conventions have been used effectively and look professional. However, I missed off the web address of the online edition of the magazine which would have made my magazine look more like the real thing.

Q2. Has original photography been used? Does the photograph match the ethos of the magazine? Would you expect to see this photograph with this magazine?

A. Most people realised that the photograph used was indeed original photography and thought that the image was very effective as the two people are using direct mode of address. They also agreed that image linked in with the 'Halloween Special' so was therefore realistic. One person however said that they would not expect to see this image on 'Q' magazine but would perhaps be more relevant on a pop magazine. I slightly agree with this however I tried to justify my use of the image by the main cover line.

Q3. Have they analysed their own magazine in depth?

A. Everyone identified in their questionnaire that I explained why I did certain things on my magazine in depth and justified it on my blog.

Q4. Finally, give an honest opinion of the look of the magazine. Is it a good representation of the magazine it is replicating?

A. The majority of people said the overall look of my magazine was good and looked realistic. They also said that the layout of my magazine was effective and made it look professional. Final improvements some people gave were to make the stars name bigger and that the 'Halloween Special' may not be featured in 'Q' magazine.

Target Audience

As I have decided to do a Pop magazine for my final task, I started to think about the target audience this genre would be aimed at. My magazine will include artists similar to Rihanna, Adele, Taylor Swift and One Direction which would appeal to a young, female audience possibly in the age range of 14-18.
As I have decided that my target audience will be a younger generation, this could suggest that the language used on my front cover, contents page and double page spread would be informal and could include some slang which would relate to young people today. The 'look' I want my magazine to portray is a positive one so bright colours could possibly be used. The image I will use will also link to this target audience and pop genre so the costumes of the cover star would also be bright and girly.

My ideal target audience member would be a young 15 year old girl who attends secondary school. Idealy she would be a typical 'girly-girl' who loves listening to pop music, the colour pink and things like flowers and hearts. She would aspire to be like pop artists like the one which will be featured on my front cover and would enjoy reading about her life and how she got to be where she is.

Paint.Net Practise

This is an example of some of the work I did in today's lesson. As this is the first time I have done Media, I wasn't familiar with the programme paint.net so decided to practise using it. In this magazine, I used the Masthead of Billboard magazine and the photo of me from the first lesson. I learnt how to duplicate layers to make the cover star's head in front of the magazine which is a technique often used in well-known magazines.

I then used the new knowledge I had gained and decided to find an image of a star that would realistically be featured in 'Billboard' magazine. I used the country/pop singer Taylor Swift on the front cover as she has been featured in the magazine previously. Again, I put the cover star over the masthead to reveal importance and to make the magazine look more professional and realistic.

Q Magazine

This is the magazine I created based around one of the biggest music magazine Q's style. I used the 'Q' masthead on the front of my magazine and stuck to the house colours of red, white and black as 'Q' often does to keep the magazine looking professional and consistent. I made the magazine a Halloween edition as the people in the photograph I took are wearing Halloween style make up. I added the main cover line 'The Young Reckless' which is the name I created for the band featured on the front page. The cover line 'We're innocent really!' under the main cover line is in speech marks to illustrate it is a line taken from the article inside the magazine enticing the reader to find out more. The make up of the two cover stars is scary however as the cover line illustrates, 'the young reckless' aren't actually 'innocent.' I also added a bar-code, date and price which are typical conventions of a magazine. I also added features such as a list of other stars featured in the magazine which 'Q' magazine often does. I then added a pug at the bottom of the magazine to persuade the reader to purchase the magazine.

Language

The language that is used in a magazine is very important in allowing us to identify the specific target audience of the magazine. Each word that is used is used for a particular reason, either to entice the target audience into buying the magazine or to put across a message etc.

Tone -  The tone expressed in a magazine reveals the attitudes towards the subject expressed by the editor or the people interviewed.

Style - The style of the magazine is the way it is written as opposed to what is actually written. This would differ due to different magazines having different target audiences such as a Top Of The Pops magazine being aimed at young teenagers so the language could be slang and more basic.

Vocabulary - The vocabulary in a magazine is the different words that have been purposely chosen for a reason. This would also differ due to different target audiences as differentwords would be used to create a different effect that links to the magazine.

Forms of address - The forms of address in a magazine could be the way text is aimed at different target audiences revealing the image the magazine wants to put forward.

Register -  Register in a magazine is the way a variety of language is used for a particular purpose or in a particular social setting. For example, the language used in magazines such as NME and Q would be more common and base then language used in a Classical music magazine.

Anaylsis of Front Cover from 'Q' Magazine

'Q' Magazine is one of the largest music magazine distributes. I particularly like this cover as I think the main image of the cover star is very effective. The main cover line '3 Words...Cheryl Cole Rocks' is clever as an artist like Cheryl Cole wouldn't usually be featured in 'Q' Magazine as her genre of music is mostly pop however the fact she is featured and the cover line possibly suggest that is changing. The image of Cheryl Cole also contrasts with images you would usually associate with a pop singer; the water makes her look messy and the dark colours also differ from the light colours such as pink and purple usually associated with happy, pop music. She is also pulling more of a rebel pose contrasting with the usual innocent look she would portray. Her make-up also links to the colour theme of the magazine - the red lipstick and dark, black eye make up relate to the make-up typical rock and roll stars would have. I also like the overall layout of this magazine as all the house colours link together making it look more professional. Only red, black, grey and white are used linking to the fact the magazine sways more to rock music which the colours would illustrate to the reader.

Research

Although this is a fashion magazine, I decided to analyse the codes and conventions and get some more ideas for the music magazine I will eventually create.

Peer-Assessment of magazine covers

1. All the tasks have been done well however, some of the covers do not have cover lines.

2. They all look realistic and keep to the colour scheme. I like how 'M' magazine uses different fonts for the main cover line and all the main cover headings suit the magazine genre. The fonts also work well.

3. Some improvements could be to add cover lines to some of the magazines and use media language when commenting on some of the covers e.g. main cover line, cover lines, direct mode of address.

Codes and Conventions Task

In this task, I have began to look even closer into the way font style, colour, size etc. is effective on the front cover of a magazine. I have used four templates of different magazines and added my own cover lines to each of them which I think relate to the main image. I have also carefully selected which fonts I think match the cover line and effectively attract the reader's attention.

Magazine 1 - 'M Mag'

In this magazine, I decided to put the cover star's name 'Gaga' in bold, red font to attract the reader's attention and possibly persuade them to buy the magazine. I also only used part of the star's name because as she is very well-known, I was sure reader's would still recognise her. I decided to put the word 'Lady' which relates to the stars name in a fancy, script-like font which relates to the usual connotations of a typical lady. I then contrasted this with the word 'Monster' which relates to one of the stars songs and did this in capitals and a more bold, striking font. I also added a date onto the magazine next to the bar code which is one of the main codes and conventions used on a magazine cover.

Magazine 2 - 'Film X'

In this magazine, I carefully chose the cover line I wanted to use which deals with the fact Hollywood always seems to make its own versions of foreign films. I used white and red font to ensure I did not distract away from the main image which is quite graphic and would attract the reader's attention immediately. I put the word 'Hollywood' in red to break up the use of colour and also to inform the reader what the main cover story is about.

Magazine 3 - 'Pitch'

In this magazine, I wanted to try out a completely different way of using font so I placed the cover star's name vertically along the side of the magazine. I think this is effective as it means there is more space on the front cover and the star's face is not covered. I made the font colours black, red and white to link to the masthead which makes the magazine look more professional which is effective as this magazine has a mass market audience. I used the phrase 'Born Villain' as it is the title of Marilyn Manson's newest album and is an unusual phrase which would attract the reader's attention. I also put the word 'inside' in a different colour to the text surrounding it to draw the reader in and inform them of the exclusive celebrity interview inside.

Magazine 4 - 'Freedom'

The cover line I have used in this magazine relates to the fact it is a 'Big Brother Issue.' I have used the colours pink and purple as they bring out the colours in the main image of the Big Brother eye. I have used capitals to attract the reader's attention and have put the word 'You' in a different colour with an exclamation mark to add emphasise and to give a personal feel to the audience.

Analysis of 'Q' magazine

Research

I like this particular edition of the music magazine 'Billboard' as the cover star - Miley Cyrus - is using direct mode of address. This is effective as it allows the reader to connect with the star but also links with the main cover line as Miley Cyrus is trying to get her fans to 'follow' her as she is changing her style. I also like the way the cover star is again covering the masthead showing she is important but also that the editors are aware their magazine is recognisable to their audience. I further like the fact the the cover star is holding her initial. It is quirky and would not be seen on many magazines. It also would attract the readers attention and make them want to pick up the magazine and purchase it.

Research

Although this is a fashion magazine and our assessment objective is to create a music magazine, I have decide to analyse this edition of 'Company' magazine as I like the layout. I like the way the main image covers the masthead as it implies that the magazine editors are confident that their masthead is recognisable to readers. I also like the way the cover star - Nicola Roberts - is dressed in glamorous  clothing and the text and colour of the text matches this.

Preliminary Exercise - School magazine

This is the cover of my school magazine I had to produce for the preliminary exercise. I decided to base my magazine wholly on Sixth Form making it appeal to a more niche market and meaning the articles included are specific to Sixth Formers and Sixth Form life itself. The Masthead I created links to St Thomas Aquinas' house colours and 'Back 2 School' reveals it is one of the first issues of the magazine published in this school year. I made the number two back to front to cleverly illustrate the fact students are returning 'back' to school after the Summer holidays. I used different typace and font colours for each different cover line to attract the readers attention and initiate the different articles. I included a barcode, date and the online edition of the magazine which are some of the main codes and conventions used in magazines.
This is the contents page for my school magazine. I have used the same masthead from the front cover so my magazine looks more professional as it is consistent. I have used some images of former Sixth Form students to link to the fact it is wholly a Sixth Form magazine. Under each photo I have added a short caption to show who is in the picture and what occasion it was taken at. I also used the school logo to illustrate what school the magazine belongs to. As it is the content page I have included some of the articles featured inside so the readers would know what to expect without having to read through the whole magazine. The masthead is bigger then the rest of the text to make it stand out to the reader. I used a back to front '2' to illustrate that it is a back to school edition of the school magazine. I used the phrase 'What's inside?' to reveal to the reader what actricles they will recieve when buying the magazine. I put this title in red and underlined it in black to link to the house colours of the magazine and keep the colour scheme consistent. I used different coloured arrows to illustrate each different article and to add a bit more colour to the page to attract the reader. The colours I have used also link to the colours in the photo.

Draft front cover of school magazine

I also started to think about the design of the front cover of my school magazine. I have decided to do a sixth form magazine named 'Back2School' which will be a September edition based on starting the new term.

Brain storm of ideas for school magazine

I have started to brain storm some possible ideas of what I am going to include in my school magazine and who it is going to be specifically aimed at. I have decided I am going to do a magazine solely for sixth form students meaning my magazine will have a niche market.

Vibe Magazine

This was a class exercise in which I added the main cover line, the extra cover lines and the web address to the Vibe magazine produced by my teacher.I was mainly focusing on the use of font for this exercise and the effect I intend it to have. I stuck to the colour scheme of red and black as it matches the Masthead and links to the colours used in the photo of the cover star. The two fonts I used were 'Gautami' and 'Agency FB'. I used these two particular fonts as they are robotic so therefore link with the image produced of Christina Aguilera as a sort of machine. I highlighted words such as 'Exclusive'  and the names of famous stars to catch the reader's eye and persuade them to purchase the magazine.

Research

I have been researching some music magazines and although most of them seem to be of the 'rock and roll' genre, I have decided to do a pop magazine. One of the biggest pop magazines I came across was 'Top of the Pops.' This type of magazine usually uses bright colours and well known stars as it is aimed at a younger audience.

Analysis of questionnaires

I composed a questionnaire to ask to students in St Thomas Aquinas their opinions on how a school magazine should look and what it should include etc. The first question I came up with was 'How do you think a school magazine should look?' The most common answers were that the magazine should have a 'professional' feel and it should be evident which school it belongs to meaning it should include the school colours.

The second question I came up with was 'Should there be a separate magazine for each year?' The people that agreed with this went on to explain that this would be ideal as each year group requires different information and latest news. The people that disagreed said that the magazine should be aimed at the whole school and should include relevant information for the whole school.

The third question was 'Should each house have its own magazine?' Seven out of the ten people who took part in the questionnaire agreed that there should be separate magazines and the rest disagreed that houses should be joint into one.

The fourth question I composed was 'What topics do you think are important to include?' The choices I included were Latest News, House System and Uniform. Six people agreed that 'Latest News' was the most important. Two people agreed that 'Uniform' was and the other two said the 'House System' was.

The fifth question was 'Who should the magazine be aimed at?' The options I gave were Students, Teachers and Parents. A huge nine of out ten people agreed that the magazine should be aimed at 'Students' and the other person said that it should be aimed at 'Teachers.'

The sixth and final question was 'Should it include aspects from outside school life such as Sports, DofE, Spiritual Life etc?' All of the people that took part in this questionnaire agreed that the school magazine should include important information from outside of school. One person added that it should because it is interesting to hear about news from outside of school and is different.

Music magazine distribution analysis

I have analysed IPC Media which is one of the biggest magazine distributors and have noticed they distribute music magazines including 'NME' and 'Uncut'. 'NME' is is one of the largest most popular weekly music magazines with a mass market where as 'Uncut' is a monthly magazine with more of a niche market.

I have analysed Bauer Media which is another magazine distributor. Bauer distribute a wider range of magazines compared to IPC Media one of which includes 'Kerrang'. 'Kerrang' - like NME - is one of the most popular music magazines and also has a mass market. Another music magazine they distribute is 'Q.' 'Q' is the UK's biggest selling music montly magazine which also has a huge mass market. It includes exciting news from the biggest and most famous rock and roll stars. Bauer does not distribute any niche magazines which contrasts with IPC media.
